Termite Control

Georgia’s mild temperature allows subterranean termite colonies to flourish. Georgia is known as the termite belt by entomologists and pest management professionals.

Subterranean termites are the most common type of termite in Georgia. They are subterranean because they need moisture to survive which is found in the soil. They eat wood and often infest structural wood in homes because of home construction with soft woods. Subterranean termites are likely to cause damage before a homeowner is aware of a problem.
Some homes are more susceptible to termites depending on the home’s construction type, home maintenance, landscaping and other conditions that are favorable to termite activity.

As mentioned, termites need moisture to survive and there are many above ground sources of moisture that may be found in a structure that isn’t being maintained properly. Leaky roofs, leaking pipes, moisture conditions in walls, etc. are conducive conditions for subterranean termites.

Homeowners should be aware of the most common sign of a termite infestation includes

]
Sudden appearance of winged termites emerging from a structure
]
Termite infested wood or wood products
]
The appearance of termite mud tubes on the interior or exterior of a structure
Subterranean termites in Georgia start swarming in February and peaks from March to May, but swarming can occur throughout the year and usually does. Georgia’s mild temperatures and rainfall activity are favorable conditions to cause termite swarming.

Another commonly found termite in Georgia is the light southeastern subterranean termite and they swarm from late July to early October. Formosan termites are less common in Georgia, but swarm after dusk in May or June and are attracted to light.
